We are delighted to confirm the appointment of Mrs Karen Austin as our new Headteacher at St Francis School, who will take up the post in September 2026.
Following a thorough and rigorous recruitment process, the interview panel unanimously agreed that Karen is the right person to lead St Francis School into its next chapter. Karen brings over 30 years of experience in education, including five years as a Headteacher, alongside a strong record of effective leadership and sustained whole-school development. Throughout her career, she has worked in and led diverse school communities, strengthening teaching, learning and curriculum design, while maintaining an unwavering commitment to safeguarding and pupil wellbeing. Her leadership is characterised by clarity, warmth and a deep commitment to enabling both children and staff to thrive.
The interview panel were particularly impressed by Karen's clear alignment with the values and vision of St Francis School. As a current member of the staffing body, she recognises the strength of the foundations already in place and is motivated by the opportunity to build on them thoughtfully and sustainably.

She shared: 'I am genuinely delighted to be taking on the role of Headteacher at St Francis School from September. Having already been part of this community, the school is very close to my heart, and I feel a real sense of pride and responsibility in being asked to lead it. I bring with me previous experience as a Headteacher, which I am very much looking forward to drawing upon as we move into this next chapter. St Francis School is a special place, defined by its caring ethos, dedicated staff and strong partnerships with families, and I am excited to build on these strengths. I look forward to working alongside pupils, staff, governors and parents as we move forward together, ensuring every child continues to feel happy, valued and supported to flourish."
Karen’s application demonstrated extensive experience in curriculum leadership, staff development, community engagement and school promotion. A steadfast focus on safeguarding and pupil wellbeing underpins her practice, alongside a firm belief that academic rigour and nurturing support must go hand in hand. She is particularly drawn to St Francis School for precisely this balance and is committed to preserving the school’s distinctive character while guiding it forward with integrity and clear moral purpose.
We are confident that Karen’s collaborative approach and existing relationships within the school community will ensure a smooth and positive transition. She is keen to work closely with governors, staff, parents and the Inspired Learning Group to shape a clear, shared vision for the school’s next phase of development, securing long-term sustainability and continued excellence.
