STAFF SPOTLIGHT: Mr Spencer

Since joining St Francis in September 2020, Mr Spencer has enjoyed everything from World Book Day celebrations to afternoons of cricket. In this Staff Spotlight, we discover his international television appearances, his surprising coffee conversion and the classic childhood book he believes every pupil should read. We also find out about the four Bs that guide his lessons and the one piece of advice every child should remember!
How long have you worked at St Francis?
Since September 2020
What's your favourite school event?
World Book Day - so much fun seeing everyone (all the staff as well!) dressing up and getting the time just to switch off and read.
Tea or coffee?
I was tea-only man for years, but two years of Lipton's Yellow Label in Malaysia pushed me into cappuccinos but the best coffee I have had is the Spanish 'Cafe con Leche'!
Cricket or Rugby?
To play and watch, cricket (though I managed to pull a hamstring last time!) but I do enjoy an afternoon at Bath or any international.
What would the pupils be surprised to know about you?
I've been interviewed on TV in three different countries: France - Rugby World Cup; Vietnam - why we had chosen to visit it; Japan - actually, I was only 6 months old and my mum was holding me as she came out with pre-learnt answers in basic Japanese about Christmas in England but I started crying which so upset the interviewer that he muddled up the question order which meant my mum's answers made no sense!
Which book should every child read?
The House at Pooh Corner - life lessons in every chapter, and - from memory - the appearance of Tigger!
What phrase do you say most often in lessons?
'Remember the 4Bs: Brain, Board, Buddy, Boss!'
What is one skill or piece of knowledge every child should have?
Always remember to check.
